A 3D-printed, easy-to-use frame to shape and pour chocking compounds when installing equipment.
When a large engine or other piece of industrial equipment is replaced, realigned, or installed, the equipment feet are supported with chocking or grouting compounds. Installers pour a liquid into a frame mold around the foot which then cures to create a water-tight foundation, keeping the machinery stabilized and aligned. The chocking frame molds are typically handmade, and custom built for each piece of equipment, requiring significant time, costs and materials including wood, sheet metal, and metal flashing.
Researchers at the US Coast Guard have streamlined this process, saving time and money with the Chocking Compound Mold Kit (CCMK), a custom 3D-printed tool that is easily modified for efficient installations and repairs. The mold is re-sizeable, reusable, and can be installed in two hours or less, significantly reducing equipment installation times. Additively manufacturing the kit streamlines the customizability for almost any installation application and lowers its production cost.
