Sohan Dasgupta

Sohan Dasgupta, J.D., Ph.D., is the Assistant Secretary for Trade and Economic Security at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).  His office plays a leading role in matters regarding Foreign Investment Risk Management (FIRM) and supply chain decisional matrices, in coordination with the White House and other agencies.  These equities include the interagency Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), Team Telecom, and the Forced Labor Enforcement Task Force (FLETF).  Dr. Dasgupta is committed to protecting and optimizing the Nation’s trade and economic security.

Dr. Dasgupta previously served as Deputy General Counsel of DHS and Special Counsel of the U.S. Department of Education.  Throughout his time in government, Dr. Dasgupta has helped shape consequential policy decisions concerning trade and investments; economic security; intelligence; domestic priorities; and international affairs.  Prior to serving as Assistant Secretary, Dr. Dasgupta was a partner at two large law firms.  His practice included litigation, investigations, regulatory and compliance matters, and international arbitration.  He has argued and briefed cases before the U.S. Courts of Appeals and briefed cases before the Supreme Court of the United States.  

Dr. Dasgupta clerked for Judge Consuelo Callahan on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and for Judge David Faber on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia.  Dr. Dasgupta earned his Ph.D. in the law of international trade and arbitration at the University of Cambridge.  His book International Interplay: The Future of Expropriation Across International Dispute Settlement recommends concrete and productive strategies and measures in that space.  Dr. Dasgupta earned his B.A. from Columbia University; his J.D. from the University of California at Berkeley (where he was elected to the Order of the Coif); and his M.Sc. from the University of Oxford. 

Dr. Dasgupta has addressed Parliaments and Congresses including the Hungarian Parliament, the Romanian Parliament, the Congress of Guatemala, and the Latin American Parliament.  He has also addressed world leaders under the auspices of the U.S. Congress, the British Parliament, and the Congress of the Philippines.  Dr. Dasgupta has received numerous awards and recognition for his legal and civic contributions.  Involved in the community, Sohan Dasgupta actively pursues charitable engagements.
